Sweets for the Sweet? Dental Strategies to Survive the Holidays
Share This Post

The holiday season is upon us and that means it is time to take extra care of your teeth. During the course of the holiday season you can expect lots of sugary temptation. Your friends or family might invite you over, there are parties, even workplaces tend to gather together to eat and drink.

All that holiday eating can take a toll on your waistline and your teeth. Innovative Dental in Moonee Ponds is your partner in preventing poor dental care during the holidays!

The Destructive Role of Sugar

Sticky plaque is constantly forming on your teeth and gums
and it contains bacteria. Those bacteria feed on the sugar in foods you eat or drink and in about 20 seconds create acids that last for about a half an hour. Those acids can destroy your tooth enamel over time, which greatly increases the risk of cavities.

What Can Be Done?

The skilled professionals at Innovative Dental will work with your to ensure your long-term oral and overall health survive the holidays.

Innovative Dental has put together some strategies on how to take care of your oral health, and at the same time, your overall health.

Holiday Strategies from Innovative Dental

Be realistic – These holiday strategies are really more like goals. Set them and don’t be too upset if you occasionally stray. Reaching half of your goals is much more impressive than having no goals to reach. It’s a process!

Keep good flossing and brushing habits – Brush twice a day and floss before bed. Once in the morning. Once in the evening. This should be routine and brushing should take two minutes at a minimum. Time yourself by singing or listening to music. Many electronic toothbrushes have convenient timers built in.

Carry your own dental supplies – To prepare for the holidays pick up some extra toothbrushes and small tubes of toothpaste for your car, coat, or purse. Trial sized packages of mouthwash and dental floss can be stored and used anywhere, and they will help keep your teeth healthy!

Stay away from foods that stick to teeth – Sugar is the enemy of dental health and its damage occurs when sugary coating remains on your teeth. Eating fewer sticky foods, particularly if brushing afterwards is difficult, can reduce risk of damage. Foods like fudge, ice-cream, or sugar-filled drinks are certain to stick, and should be substituted for.

Eat well – Most of the holidays are spent at home. You won’t be out at parties or work events all the time, so make the meals that you can completely control count. By eating well you leave less space for sugar-rich foods. Good nutrition is good for you dental health and your general health.

See us in January – Please call Innovative Dental and make an appointment for early in January. The small problems of January can become big problems later, if not dealt with in a timely way. It’s sensible to get things checked and cleaned after the last of the seasonal fun to ensure that your New Year comes with a happy and healthy smile.
