Some people may have medical conditions that increase their risk of developing dental diseases, and might benefit from more frequent checks, while others will need to see us less frequently.
What to Expect During a Dental Examination
A dental exam is very straightforward and does not involve any treatment. Dr Eshak will thoroughly examine the outside and inside of your mouth, including your teeth, gums, bite, lips, cheeks and tongue for any signs of disease. Much of the examination is carried out visually, although Dr Eshak may gently probe your teeth and gums to check for any signs of decay, or to assess the condition of your gums.
If you are a new patient we will probably want to take a set of digital dental x-rays as these provide us with a clear picture of your current dental health, including areas that are normally hidden from view as well as externally we check the TMJ, for any signs of disease. Regular patients will generally only require dental x-rays every two years or so.
Professional Dental Cleanings
Professional dental cleanings are an important part of your regular dental examination, as hardened plaque bacteria or calculus is scraped away from your teeth. This helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy, and reduces your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. At the end of the cleaning your teeth are gently polished, which has the nice effect of removing some surface stains, followed by Fluoride treatment.
