If you are missing a tooth or need one extracted, dental professionals may suggest that you consider getting a dental implant. While this may seem a bit overwhelming or scary, your dentist has good reason for suggesting this. Here at Innovative Dental, we aim to provide the best advice and care to all of our patients. However, it is important that you are informed on both the pros and the cons on dental implants.
Pros of Dental Implants
Permanent tooth replacement – The implant, once put in is a permanent solution. The implant uses titanium which is biocompatible and strong. The jaw bone will heal around the implant, holding it in place. The replacement tooth itself may need to be replaced after many years due to general wear and tear, however, the implant will not need to be replaced.
Natural look and feel – Compared to dentures or bridges, implants have a greater success rate of achieving the natural look and feel. Dentures and bridges can sometimes slip, affecting your ability to talk. As dental implants are secured in your mouth, they do not slip or affect your ability to speak or eat.
Simple care – The care for a dental implant is much like caring for your normal teeth. It is as simple as brushing twice a day, flossing and drinking water.
Cons of Dental Implants
Not right for everyone – while implants can replace one or multiple teeth it may not be the right option for you. Things such as jaw size, smoking status and bone and oral health can determine if dental implants are right for you.
Time – Getting dental implants require multiple appointments typically over a 6-month period to ensure success.
Risk of complications – Things such as gum and sinus infection are associated risks of dental implants.
